SUMMARY:What Can Philosophy Learn from Religious Traditions? New Dialogues between Talmud\, the Bible and Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:This conference will bring into dialogue leading experts from Jewish and Christian traditions to explore what contemporary philosophy can learn from concepts and methods whereby religious traditions define themselves\, transmit and develop knowledge\, and invite critical self-reflection on their boundaries. \nIt is widely recognized that philosophy can be used to elucidate and explain religious beliefs. However\, in recent years\, scholars in the Jewish and Christian traditions have shown that it also works the other way around: philosophy can benefit from resources provided by religious traditions. The volumes Talmud /and/ Philosophy: Conjunctions\, Disjunctions\, Continuities (Indiana University Press\, 2024)\, edited by James Adam Redfield and Sergey Dolgopolski\, and Biblical Narratives and Human Flourishing: Knowledge Through Narrative (Routledge\, 2024)\, edited by Eleonore Stump and Judith Wolfe\, provide a good overview of this exciting new field of study. For instance\, contributions to the latter volume show that Biblical narratives transmit and convey second-personal knowledge of persons that cannot be reduced to propositional knowledge. Upon close examination of biblical narratives\, it become clear that they contain knowledge which is not accessible by the methods of analytic philosophy which predominate in the Anglo-American philosophy of religion/philosophical theology. In a similar manner\, the volume Talmud /and/ Philosophy has challenged the hegemony of philosophy over the intellectual tradition of Talmud and called for a new paradigm in which both Talmud and philosophy’s methods of approaching shared problems can inform one another. \nBuilding upon this new conversation\, our conference will bring into dialogue leading experts from Jewish and Christian traditions to explore what contemporary philosophy can learn from concepts and methods whereby religious traditions define themselves\, transmit and develop knowledge\, and invite critical self-reflection on their boundaries. \n  \nMore information can be found here. \nAttendance is free\, but registration is required by 1 October 25 at: redfieldzoll25@gmail.com

Oktober 2025 findet die Jahrestagung der DGR zum Thema „Religion und Existenz“ in Münster statt\, die von Prof. Dr. Thomas Hanke und Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Grosshans organisiert wird. \nDazu ergeht eine herzliche Einladung zur Teilnahme. \nDas Tagungsprogramm besteht aus folgenden Vorträgen (in alphabethischer Reihenfolge): \n\nGianluca De Candia (Köln): „Nur die Freiheit geht der Freiheit voraus“: Existenz und Christentum in der Philosophie Luigi Pareysons\nIngolf U. Dalferth: Von der Religion zur Existenz. Zur Aufgabe einer kritischen Religionsphilosophie\nJakob Deibl (Wien): „Wir durchlaufen alle eine exzentrische Bahn“. Überlegungen zu Religion und Existenz ausgehend von Hölderlin\nElisabeth Gräb-Schmidt (Tübingen): Existenz als Freiheit in der Zeit – Zur kategorialen Bedeutung der Transzendenzdimension bei Kierkegaard\nDouglas Hedley (Cambridge): Prospects for a contemporary Christian Platonism\nSimone Neuber (Tübingen/Jena): Gott im Selbstverhältnis\nJure Zovko (Zadar): Existenz und Transzendenz: Religionsphilosophische Erkundungen im Denken Martin Heideggers\n\nAnmeldungen zur Tagung werden bis zum 30. September 2025 bei Frau My Linh Schnackertz (systheol@uni-muenster.de) wegen der Planung des Tagungskaffees etc. erbeten. Eine Tagungsgebühr wird nicht erhoben. \nDas Tagungsprogramm beginnt am Donnerstag\, den 16. Oktober\, am späten Nachmittag und endet am Samstag\, den 18. Oktober\, am frühen Abend bzw. einem anschließenden gemeinsamen Abendessen. \nTagungsort ist das Borromaeum (Domplatz 8\, 48143 Münster). \nCall for Papers \nBei der Tagung gibt es die Möglichkeit\, einen Kurzvortrag von ca. 20 Minuten (+ 10 Minuten Diskussion) zum Tagungsthema zu halten. Wer einen solchen Vortrag präsentieren möchte\, sollte bis zum 14. September 2025 eine rund halbseitige Skizze des geplanten Vortrags an Hans-Peter Grosshans (grosshans@uni-muenster.de) schicken. Die Rückmeldung\, welche Kurzvorträge präsentiert werden können\, wird zeitnah danach erfolgen.
