SUMMARY:Liberal Theology Today
DESCRIPTION:Beschreibung\n\n  \nThe label “liberal theology” is inextricably interwoven with the approach of a variety of pre-dominantly Protestant theologians in the 19th century\, who were concerned with the connections between modernity and Christianity. \nInitially\, most of these theologians rejected the label of liberalism as it was prone to misunderstandings that would merge their theological approach all too easily with political or even economic liberalism. Yet the label nonetheless established itself as the name for a theological trajectory engaged with the transformations of Christianity in modernity. \nIn spite of a number of contradictory traditions and trends that aimed to expose liberal theology as a modern sell-out of Christianity\, the liberal trajectory never disappeared in Western Christianity. On the contrary\, it experienced a number of revivals and reincarnations\, including the careful historical-critical research on the development of a variety of liberal theologians that has been conducted for decades in international contexts. \nThe conference “Liberal Theology Today”\, which will take place at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München\, Germany\, from 18 to 21 July 2018\, aims to offer the opportunity to take stock of liberal theology today. \nWhat are the challenges that liberal theologians have to confront today?\nWhich contents in ethics and dogmatics are essential to the liberal programme?\nWhat characterizes liberal theology internationally?\nHow can liberal theologians contribute to the current life of the church?\nHow does the liberal trajectory approach confessional and religious pluralisms?\nWhat criticisms of liberal theology have to be taken into account? \nIn order to tackle these questions\, internationally renowned scholars will gather in Munich.
