Euregio Science Fund Project "Resilient Beliefs": Three Postdoc Positions

Funded by the Euregio Science Fund, the research project “Resilient Beliefs: Religion and Beyond” (Fondazione Bruno Kessler Trento, University of Innsbruck, Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule Brixen) will investigate whether and in what circumstances belief resilience (understood as articulate resistance to change and revision) is a sign of irrationality or narrow-mindedness, and in what circumstances it is a healthy component of our epistemic, moral and spiritual lives.
Bringing together expertise in epistemology, philosophy of religion, religious studies, and systematic theology, the project’s main focus is on belief resilience in the religious domain.
The Interregional Project Network, coordinated by Fondazione Bruno Kessler, is pleased to announce three postdoctoral research positions:
• one postdoc position in Religious Studies at the Center for Religious Studies, Fondazione Bruno Kessler Trento (full-time, 2 years, starting on 2 May 2022). The successful candidate will be involved in: (a) analysing recent debates on religious disagreement and religious diversity in analytic philosophy and religious studies; (b) reviewing and analysing recent literature on dogmatism and belief polarisation from social and cognitive psychology; (c) contextualising the debates on religious disagreement and belief polarisation within the long-standing dispute over the viability of ‘religion’ as a category of scientific and scholarly inquiry. • one Post-Doc position in Philosophy at the Department of Christian Philosophy, University of Innsbruck (full-time, 2 years, starting on 2 May 2022). The successful candidate will be involved in: (a) the descriptive / phenomenological analysis of examples of intuitively “good” and “bad” forms of belief resilience. S/he will co-author a paper to be submitted to a leading journal specialising in the intersection between epistemology and psychology or religious studies; (b) shaping a more general theory of the characteristics of “good” and “bad” resilient beliefs; (c) testing the applicability of the epistemological theory, with a special emphasis on forms of partisan justification and possible cross connections with theology. Vacancy Theological Perspectives on Family Responsibility ‘Moral Compass Project’, Protestant Theological University, Amsterdam

In 2019, the PThU received a major grant for the ‘Moral Compass Project’, a seven-year systematic-theological research project. The ‘Moral Compass Project’ explores how one can meaningfully think about a moral compass that transcends our personal preferences in a situation of moral pluralism. What significance could a ‘moral compass’ have for our human knowledge and experience of the ‘good’? How does a transcendent ‘Good’ relate to ‘good’ that people can discover and experience by themselves? Can we speak meaningfully about the ‘good’ as something that precedes our human understanding of morality, while at the same time it needs to be discovered anew in new situations?

The Moral Compass Project consists of six sub-projects, three of which are on the level of (meta-) ethical theory (1.2.3.), and three which investigate the fundamental questions in relation to a concrete field of life: end of life, family and human rights. From 1 September 2019, for the project on family, we are looking for a

full-time contract PhD candidate 'Moral Compass Project’

As a PhD candidate you will work at our location in Amsterdam. You participate in biweekly meetings with the Moral Compass research group. Your research will be conducted under the supervision of Dr. Petruschka Schaafsma and Prof. Maarten Wisse, with whom you will have a monthly consultation. In the first year of your research, you start with writing a research proposal based on the research project as described below. There is room for creativity within the focus of the Moral Compass project as a whole.

Sub project 5: Theological perspectives on family responsibility
Do we have a special responsibility for family members? The government and healthcare institutions seem to assume that this is the case, especially now that the welfare state is waning. The blood relationship, or a lasting partner relationship, is then normative. In the meantime, the blood tie and sustainable relations are questioned as to their normativity for family law. Instead the reality of the actual caring relationship has become a crucial factor in determining rights and duties of family members.
It is clear that two views of a ‘moral compass’ are at stake here that cannot simply be traced back to each other: founded in a ‘natural’ family tie, or rather in an intensive kind of care relationship. This ambiguity is the reason for this project. The strong appeal to the family tie needs a convincing substantiation. How could this be given? Are the options mentioned the only ones, and are they convincing? Can the appeal to a family tie be substantiated or explained? Is it not primarily an expression of a mystery that we experience as somehow given? And to what extent should we take this experience ethically seriously?
The first step of the research consists of further analyzing the aforementioned ambiguity in the public domain, varying from legislation to policy of care institutions and public debate. In a second step, this current situation is associated with prevailing ethical views on family responsibility from within and outside theology. Also among ethicists, the emphasis is on either the blood tie or the special relationship that is created by a shared history and care for each other. Do these visions help to better understand the current situation? In the third step, the illuminating power of the notion of a ‘moral compass’ in this area is further investigated, with special attention to possible theological elaborations. A theological perspective has a special sensitivity to the possibly ‘holy’, unassailable or transcendent character of the of good. Is this also present in the case of family responsibility? A critical perspective is always presupposed in this study, because it is clear that the good is never given with the family bond as such. There is a great risk that family responsibility due to this 'holy' character remains without critical reflection and substantiation. Is a theological use of the idea of a moral compass that is both critical and constructive possible in this field of morality?

Requirements
• a degree in theology with a relevant (research) master’s programme, or an equivalent of it;
• a MA-thesis in the field of systematic theology, theological ethics, or another relevant discipline that shows affinity with the project described above;
• affinity with theological research from the profile and perspective of the Protestant Theological University;
• the ability to interpret sources accurately and to relate them to topical issues and debates in society at large
• the ability to make creative connections based on this analysis of sources with the questions that are central to the 'Moral Compass Project' about the recognisability of the good and the transcendent or divine character of the good, with a view to making a constructive contribution to this project.

Proficiency in working creatively with Biblical and literary sources in one's own ethical reflection is recommended.

Your application should be accompanied by a first draft for a research proposal (max. 2 pages), written in English. We assess the proposal on its quality, innovative character, viability and the extent to which it fits in our research programme.

What do we offer?
At the PThU you will work in an environment that characterised by an fascination for what belief and religion actually mean for people. From that fascination, we conduct relevant academic research on the developments in society and church also worldwide. In our education programmes we train students to be the future ministers of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands as well as general theological experts, and provide post-academic training for ministers and chaplains.

We offer our contract PhD candidates the following:
• You will receive an employment contract of 1.0 fte (full-time equivalent) for one year. After a positive result of the assessment of progress an extension of 2.5 to 3 years will be offered.
• Your salary will be according to the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (salary scale P). This starts from a gross salary of € 2,325 per month in the first year of employment to a maximum gross salary of € 2,972 per month.
• 70% of your commuter travel costs will be reimbursed (public transport, 2nd class). Costs for business related trips will be reimbursed 100% (public transport, 1st class).
• You will have a specific budget for conference and symposia participation as well as for any other competence training activities.

Sub project 2: Law and virtue in the Protestant tradition
Since a few decades, virtue ethics has been on a revival. In virtue ethics a teleological conception of the human being is presupposed, in which the human being is aimed at realizing the good life and the common good. What the good is can be known and discovered by our human nature (natural law) or can be found in shared practices and traditions. Virtue ethics is rearticulated in contrast to modern ethics, which focuses rather on ‘general principles’ which, regardless of practices and traditions, should lead to just and right moral actions. Often, the Reformation is seen as the origin of modern ethics, in which the connection has been lost between Gods revealed law and the universal recognizability of the good, as well as between commandments and virtues (Alasdair MacIntyre, Brad Gregory). The question is whether this interpretation is correct. Post-Reformation theologians in particular, developed their ethics on the basis of both divine law and the virtues. In their writings, natural law, virtues and the general recognizability of the good are all present. At the same time they renewed the tradition, on the one hand by correcting classical virtue ethics from Biblical revelation, on the other hand with an open eye towards modernity. The continuity and discontinuity between post-Reformation theology and medieval scholasticism has already been investigated on various themes, but still unexplored is the way in which these post-Reformation theologians connect divine law, human law and virtue. The importance of research into the field of post-Reformation ethics is that a significant link can be found between the classical Christian ethical tradition and modernity. Therefore, the aim of this research is threefold. First, it is aimed at reconstructing the way in which these theologians connect the Reformed emphasis on the Decalogue with classical virtue ethics, and what their views are about the human ability to know the good, despite the sinful nature of the human being. Second, the aim is to deconstruct the dominant narrative that the Reformation has been a major factor in the breakdown of the tradition. Finally, this project constructively examines how post-Reformation theological thought on law and virtue can be made fruitful in our time.

Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter/in Stelle im Rahmen des Projekts „Nature of God“ in Innsbruck

Die Katholisch-Theologische Fakultät der Universität Innsbruck schreibt im Rahmen des von der John Templeton Foundation unterstützten Projekts „The Nature of God“ eine 75%-Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter/in-Stelle, beginnend mit spätestens dem 1. August 2016, aus.

Jungwissenschaftler/innen (nicht älter als 38 Jahre) in den Bereichen Philosophie und/oder Theologie, die idealerweise promoviert sind und/oder im Wissenschaftsbetrieb gearbeitet haben, sind eingeladen, sich für die auf zwei Jahre ausgelegte Stelle zu bewerben, zu einem Satz von € 37.800 brutto/Jahr.

Kenntnisse in der Fachdidaktik der Philosophie und Theologie sowie Erfahrungen im Schulbetrieb bzw. in der Erwachsenenbildung (Volkshochschulen, Akademien etc.) sind wünschenswert.

Das Stellenprofil umfasst im Wesentlichen zwei Schwerpunkte:

Der Stelleninhaber/ die Stelleninhaberin unterstützt die sogenannten „outreach“-Aktivitäten des Projekts. Diese umfassen insbesondere

(a) Beiträge zu Themen der aktuellen analytischen Religionsphilosophie für ein interessiertes Laienpublikum bzw. für den Lehrbetrieb (Schule und Erwachsenenbildung) didaktisch entsprechend zu verfassen, und (b) den Projektpartner Katholische Akademie Mainz bei der Organisation zweier Essaywettbewerbe und summer schools (4 Tage) für Schüler konzeptionell und administrativ zu unterstützen.

Der Stelleninhaber/ die Stelleninhaberin /innen soll zudem eine eigene Forschungsarbeit in einem projektrelevanten Themenfeld verfolgen (z. B. das Gottesbild des klassisches Theismus und die Kritik daran; alternative Gotteskonzepte; Eigenschaften Gottes usw.). Die Forschungsarbeit kann im Hinblick auf eine wissenschaftliche Qualifikationsschrift verwendet werden oder für wissenschaftliche Artikel in fachrelevanten Zeitschriften.

Es sei darauf hingewiesen, dass die Forschungsarbeiten systematisch ausgerichtet sein sollen. Historische, exegetische und pastoraltheologische und didaktische Projekte können berücksichtigt werden, wenn sie einen genügend starken systematischen Bezug zum allgemeinen Projektthema aufweisen. Forschungsvorhaben, die komplementäre philosophische Zugänge (z.B. Transzendentalphilosophie, Existenzphilosophie, Phänomenologie etc.) berücksichtigen, sind ebenso willkommen, solange eine ernsthafte und eingehende Bereitschaft zur Auseinandersetzung mit Beiträgen aus der analytischen Philosophie erkennbar ist.

Wir würden uns besonders über Bewerbungen von Forscherinnen freuen, da die Projektleitung bemüht ist, den Frauenanteil in der philosophischen und theologischen Forschung zu erhöhen. Im Fachbereich 02 (Katholische Theologie) der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster ist ab dem 01.08.2016 befristet bis zum 31.07.2019 eine PostDoc-Stelle einer wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiterin/ eines wissenschaftlichen Mitarbeiters Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L mit 65% der regelmäßigen Arbeitszeit zu besetzen.

Die Stelle ist dem Forschungsprojekt „Gott oder Göttliches“ der Professur für Fundamentaltheologie und Religionsphilosophie zugeordnet. Dieses Projekt wird in Kooperation mit dem Institut für Pastoralpsychologie und Spiritualität der Philosophisch-Theologischen Hochschule Sankt Georgen realisiert. Das von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderte Projekt zielt darauf ab, die Gründe für die Krise des traditionellen Theismus auszuloten. Dies geschieht angesichts des Wandels religiöser Einstellungen sowie im Horizont der Klärung anthropologischer Grundbedingungen und begrifflich-systematischer Zuordnungen.

Die regelmäßige Arbeitszeit beträgt bei Vollbeschäftigung zurzeit 25 Stunden und 45 Minuten wöchentlich.

Der Aufgabenbereich umfasst:
• Historisch-systematische Studien zu Leitbegriffen wie Theismus, Panentheismus, Pantheismus usw.
• die Arbeit an anthropologischen Grundstrukturen des Transzendenzbezugs
• die Ausarbeitung eines neuen Klassifikationssystems für religiöse Einstellungen in Korrelation von historisch-systematischen und praktisch-psychologischen Kategorien

Voraussetzungen für die Einstellung sind:
• eine Promotion in Philosophie und/oder Theologie
• hervorragende Kenntnisse der religionsphilosophischen bzw. systematisch-theologischen Diskurse zur Gottesfrage
• überdurchschnittliche Fähigkeiten zur vernetzten Analyse und Begriffsarbeit
• sehr gute Kenntnisse der lateinischen und englischen Sprache

10 Promotionsstellen am Graduiertenkolleg der Uni Rostock

Die Universität Rostock vergibt im Rahmen des interdisziplinären DFG-Graduiertenkollegs GRK 1887 „Deutungsmacht: Religion und belief systems in Deutungsmachtkonflikten“ vorbehaltlich der Mittelzuweisung:
10 Promotionsstellen (65 % E13 ab 1.4.2014) für maximal 3 Jahre, jeweils jährlich befristet und evaluiert, und
1 Koordinationsstelle zur Wissenschaftsorganisation (50 oder 65 % E13 ab 1.1.2014) für bis zu 4,5 Jahre, jeweils jährlich befristet (Kennziffer D 199-13).
Beginn des GRK und der Förderung ist der 1. April 2014. Die Vergütung richtet sich nach den üblichen Sätzen für Promotionsstellen (nicht Stipendien) E13 der DFG.
